Alef - meaning Oneness with God

New mum Natalie Portman has called her baby son Alef, according to Israeli news reports.

The Oscar-winning actress gave birth to fiance Benjamin Millepied’s child last month and she has honoured her Jewish roots by naming the boy after the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, reports Israel Hayom.

Babynames.com defines the ancient name’s meaning as “Oneness with God”.

An intensely private couple, Portman and Millepied have yet to confirm the birth of their son let alone his name but Portman has never made a secret of her love for her native Israel.

The Black Swan star was born Natalie Hershlag in Jerusalem. When Portman was three years old, her family relocated to the United States eventually settling in New York.

At the age of 13, the actress took her grandmother’s maiden name as her stage name after winning her first starring film role in Luc Besson’s The Professional.

Portman went on to earn wide fame as Padme Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

Earlier this year she won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Darren Aronofsky’s ballet drama Black Swan, the film that brought her and choreographer Millepied together

Now we know the name maybe they will need one of our personalised nappy cakes.

2011 hurricane names - Is your name on the list?

Below you will find the listing of hurricane names for the Atlantic Ocean for the year 2011. For every year, there is a pre-approved list of tropical storm and hurricane names. These lists have been generated by the National Hurricane Center since 1953. At first, the lists consisted of only female names; however, since 1979, the lists alternate between male and female.

Hurricanes are named alphabetically from the list in chronological order. Thus the first tropical storm or hurricane of the year has a name that begins with “A” and the second is given the name that begins with “B.” The lists contain hurricane names that begin from A to W, but exclude names that begin with a “Q” or “U.”

There are six lists that continue to rotate. The lists only change when there is a hurricane that is so devastating, the name is retired and another hurricane name replaces it.

Thus, the 2011 hurricane name list is the same as the 2005 hurricane name list although four hurricane names were retired after the devastating 2005 hurricane season so on the 2011 list Dennis was replaced by Don, Katrina was replaced by Katia, Rita was replaced by Rina, Stan was replaced Sean, and Wilma was replaced by Whitney.

Is your name on the list?    Do you know a new baby whose name is on the list?  If so you will be needing one of our baby gifts.

Now unborn babies can choose their own name.

Soon-to-be parents no longer have to endure the trouble of sifting through a seemingly endless book of baby names in search of the perfect one. It’s much, much easier to just let unborn kids choose anyway. That way, they won’t be filled with a lifetime of resentment because they were named “Like” after Facebook or something.

Believe it or not, your still-developing child is more than capable of picking its own name before the big birth, and Kick to Pick – a new 99-cent iPhone app – will help your bundle of joy choose the right one.

The app randomly generates thousands of baby names. All parents have to do is launch the generator, place the phone on the baby bump, and wait for the little guy – or gal – to give a big kick. The app monitors the baby’s movements, and any large kick detected will stop the generator and reveal what the baby has chosen.

But no worries, parents. You’re not relinquishing all baby-naming power. Parents can narrow down the thousands of names by gender or create a list of favorites. They can also just simply reject the name the generator spits out – though that might hurt the baby’s feelings a wee bit.

“The idea for Kick to Pick came from a discussion about baby’s choices and the fact they had no influence over the name they go onto keep for the rest of their lives,” said Nathan Parks, the creator of the app, in a statement.

Thus, if your kid picks a weird name and then complains down the road, you can be sure that it wasn’t your fault.

Now I love the fact that technology can make our life easier but this does seem a little lazy!!!

Cyclone v Hurricane baby names

I blogged last year about baby hurricane/cyclone names. And in the wake of Cyclone Yasi this week, thought I would research the naming process a little more. Who would have thought that there are 10 different lists according to worldwide locality? That names are permanently struck off the list once the are used?  And there even is a list of retired names - for when a name becomes outdated!

We have not sent out any personalised baby gifts for any Yasi’s this week. Nor ones for Floyd.
